Paper Conservation

There are nearly 250 paintings in the paper painting collection of the President of Sanskriti Prathisthanincluding prints, lithographs, pencil drawings, watercolours. The restoration work included cleaning, washing, mending, lining, mounting etc.

( ref Gallery ) This paper painting by Satish Gupta was previously restored. The painting, made with charcoal on a thick handmade paper, had fungus spores (see the detail) and was also eaten up by silverfish. It was previously restored, and was retouched to hide irregularities. Washing on blotting paper was done followed by mending, filling and retouching, and finally the painting was mounted on acid free mount board.

Daily Prayers is a set of 25 plates of the British Period originated from 1857. The methodology of these prints is really different. The white sizing layer is given on the paper and print is taken upon them. The prints were quiet yellow and acidic before restoration. They were stuck on the paper board with brown paper tape. Some of the prints were quiet damaged and few areas were nearly lost. All the plates were washed in distilled water, mended and wherever required were lined on the other support of tissue paper.

The title page was badly damaged. It was stuck on the paper board with brown paper tapes. The brown paper tapes were removed with Methyl cellulose gel and paper was thoroughly washed in distilled water. Finally the infilling with other tissue paper of the same thickness is done. Similarly other plates were also restored in the same way.
